Hello to my readers, my friends, my family, and anyone in the romance industry who sees this:

Gather 'round, I have a story to tell. It's about why, after five years as a published erotic romance author, I am saying goodbye to the erotica and erotic romance genre. At some point soon it seems this will also mean goodbye to secular romance novels in general.

Here's what happened:

In late 2012, after the Sandy Hook shooting, I turned to God for answers (as did many others). Quick background: I was born and raised Jewish and was even practicing Orthodox Judaism for a few years around the time I met my husband in 2004. I kept kosher best I could, wore the long skirts, went to Shabbat dinners at the rabbi's house, and found my husband on Jdate, a Jewish dating site. I did all this in my ever-present quest to be closer to God. Unfortunately the harder I tried the further from God I felt. It wasn't working, so I tried harder. After three years I felt more separated from God than before I started my attempt to practice all the laws of the bible (specifically the Torah, the first 5 books of the Old Testament). When my Dear Husband (DH) was ready to be more relaxed in our approach to Judaism, I was ready with him — I stopped trying to earn my way into God's good graces.

In 2010 my first erotic romance was published by Ellora’s Cave, and my professional writing career began, to be followed by twenty-plus novels and novels, including six with Simon & Schuster/Pocket and a bunch of indie books. I never felt as if being Jewish and writing erotic romance was an issue at all.

Back to Sandy Hook. I promise it relates to why I'm no longer going to be writing erotic romance, although I'm sure many of you can guess at this point. For the first time in my life while reading the bible, numerous Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament (especially the books of Isaiah and Micah) just jumped out at me like crazy. I thought, "From the little I know about Jesus (mainly from the musicals Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar), these Messianic prophecies actually sound a lot like... Jesus." Which then made me think, "Oh no." Because that meant I had to read the New Testament to find out for sure, which is a pretty taboo thing for an Orthodox Jewish girl to do.

When I opened the New Testament and read about Jesus, something clicked. I then spent several months trying to ignore what I had just learned -- that there were 333 Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament, and that Jesus had fulfilled Every. Single. One. The statistical chances of that happening are astronomically low to the point of impossibility. Yet Christmas rolled around and I did what I always did — ignored the holiday and lit the Chanuka menorah instead.

It took me a while to warm up to the idea that, while I would always be Jewish by birth and race, down to my very DNA (97% Ashkenazi Jewish, just like my DH), that I was now of the belief that Jesus was the Messiah I had previously been waiting for. That made me a Jewish Christian. If you are Jewish and want to infuriate everyone in your family, try telling them the Good News. As far as my mom and dad (and siblings and extended family etc) were concerned, it was awful news.

In late 2013 DH and I were living in Idaho, attending church weekly, also attending bible studies weekly, and a woman's group weekly for me as well. For the first time in my life, I put up a Christmas tree December 2013. After about a year we got baptized, and DH started playing guitar in the church band. This whole time I had been easily able to separate my "real life" (including my spiritual life), from my writing career. Especially since at church, few people knew I was Shoshanna Evers since I go by my married name.

Those who knew I wrote secular romance novels, like my friends from church, wouldn't read my books. I was fine with that since I knew it wasn't their thing. No one chastised me about it (except for one random girl I didn't know, and I thought she was just being stupid), but I found myself justifying my career anyway. "It's just fiction," I'd say. "No one's actually 'sinning' in real life, anyway." When I met up with other writers, I'd joke about how I'd go to church in the morning and write hot sex in the afternoon.

At some point it just stopped being funny to me. I felt, to put it in "Christianese," convicted. As if God wanted me to feel badly about my hypocrisy so I'd rethink my career.

Though I attempted NOT TO ALLOW my faith to interfere with my successful writing career, my books began having progressively less sex and more God in them with each new book I put out. Not on purpose, mind you. One reviewer recently noted that "when they finally do get to be together, the [love] scenes are tasteful and not over the top." Could you imagine anyone saying that about a book from early in my career? Never! It became clear that whether I was willing to admit it or not, my books were getting cleaner and more romance and character/plot focused than sex-focused. It wasn't a deliberate change, it was just happening as I wrote. Once I sat down to think about why I was having so much writer's block, constantly procrastinating instead of working on my books, I realized why: I'm no longer excited to write erotica or erotic romance.

Maybe I've just burned myself out on it by being so prolific over the past five years, or maybe God really has just been changing my heart slowly enough for me to remain open to it. If you drop a frog in boiling water, he'll jump out. But if you put him in cool water and slowly turn up the heat, the frog will boil to death. Not saying I am a dead frog — just saying that if I had known when I first opened up that bible after Sandy Hook that my career would have to stop immediately, I never would have had the guts to look into Jesus for myself. If my friends at church had told me I was being a sinner by writing my books, I may have stopped going to church, or stopped being friends with them. I'm lucky that instead, this heart-change about what I should be writing versus what I was writing happened over the course of three years. The past three years have given me time to simmer a bit.

While my characters used to jump into bed with each other immediately, now I found myself halfway through writing the book without so much as a kiss happening. I've fought this feeling for the past year (2015), because I know what I'm good at, and I know what my readers like. I knew if I changed what I was doing too much, I'd lose most of my readers. Since writing is my full-time job, and it literally pays the bills, losing everything I've built in the past five years frightened me.

I'm still scared to death about this. But I've also reached a point where I feel like I'm hiding my true self, my true faith, and what I truly want to write. It's made being Shoshanna Evers uncomfortable for me, because I feel like I am no longer the same person who wrote The Enslaved Trilogy or The Man Who Holds the Whip. So even though I know this is going to be a hard pill to swallow for a lot of my readers and associates, I had to just come clean and say what I've been dealing with.

It's been an identity crisis of sorts: Who is Shoshanna Evers? Do I want to be that anymore? Do I have to be that, or can I reinvent myself?

At first I answered those questions like this:

Who is Shoshanna Evers? An erotic romance author.

Do I want to be that anymore? No.

Do I have to be that in the future? Yes. My readers expect that of me, and they pay my rent. Besides, it's what I know how to do well.

Can I reinvent myself? No. Who goes from being an erotica writer to an inspirational writer?

Now, I've changed my answers to reflect my true identity:

Who is Shoshanna Evers? An erotic romance author (at the moment).

Do I want to be that anymore? No.

Do I have to be that in the future? NO. I may lose my beloved readers, I may lose my agent, I may lose my upcoming 6 book contract, but God will find a way to make it work out. He always does.

Can I reinvent myself? YES. I'm only 36 years old. I have the rest of my adult life to write whatever I want. Thank God.

My agent, Stacey Glick of Dystel & Goderich, thankfully said that she would support me in this new career direction. Yay!! "I am nothing if not flexible," she said. :) Unfortunately, (I knew going in that this would be the case) the six book contract we were in the process of negotiating with a publisher (actually wrapping up negotiations) for a dark romance trilogy and a steamy cowboy trilogy, is no longer going to happen. Thankfully the editor and publishing house were understanding about what I want to write now, and they understand it doesn't fit what they were looking to publish from me. Nothing personal. I get it; I'm not sad. God opens windows whenever he closes a door.
Fortunately, a woman who was on Amazon looking for a book to buy ran across it, and recognized me (which is amazing in and of itself, since they didn't credit my name anywhere, not that doing so would make it anymore legal or morally right). She contacted me and told me what was going on (thank you!).

I reported it to Amazon KDP. Since the author is in Kindle Unlimited, that means he's in KDP Select, which means he's exclusive to Amazon, which means I don't have to go chasing this cover down all over the place, thank goodness. I just need Amazon to take it down...in all their countries.

UPDATE 9/2/15: SUCCESS! Amazon agreed to take it down from all countries within 2-3 days!
This is the 1 star review I posted on the book's product page, to warn other readers (as of this writing, my review is not yet showing up on Amazon):

That is my picture on the cover, but I am not a cover model. I am a NYT and USA Today bestselling romance author, and I've worked really hard to get there. I did NOT give this "author" Ricky Andrew permission to use a picture of me as his book cover. That photograph is copyrighted by the photographer, and I *never gave* Ricky Andrew a model release or the license to use my pic for his commercial gain. He has no right to use me, a woman who has worked her ass off writing romance novels since 2010, as an unwilling "cover model" to sell his book. If it even IS his book.

Why do I think he might be plagiarizing as well as stealing another author's likeness? If you Google "Ricky Andrew Author," all you find is other links on Amazon to his other books...no author website, no Facebook, no Twitter, no way to contact him (I tried) -- and most of those links lead to books which have already been taken down. Books only get taken down on Amazon if they are violating copyright. Even out-of-print books have pages that stay up on Amazon forever. So something is fishy here, beyond him using my picture against my will to sell his books.

Since he is claiming to be a romance author, then I have a feeling he knows exactly whose photo he was using, which is really icky and makes me feel targeted. And now this book is actually selling. Please, readers, do not think I have anything to do with this atrocity. I am an unwilling participant. I have already notified Amazon KDP.

If you bought this book, whether through KU or not, please ask Amazon to refund your money so that these guys can't gain from violating me. Readers, thank you for your support, I appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Shoshanna Evers
Since there is no "look inside" feature for this book, I wasn't able to put any of the content through a plagiarism detector. If anyone has the book already (please don't buy it) perhaps you can find out for the romance community which other author "Ricky Andrew" may have ripped off.
UPDATE 3: Another author read the sample pages and said it might not be plagiarized, it looks like a poor translation from another language (although that could possibly be from another author's book, then translated to English using an online translation tool.)
Oh hey - if you click through to the Wikipedia page about me, you'll notice it's a bit out of date. If you do Wikipedia updates and feel like updating it with my other other books that hit NYT and USAT lists since it was originally posted, and current books, email me for info or for help with anything else you need! :) Thanks!

(Shoshanna Evers has been my pen name since 2009, which makes it legally my real name in 46 states just by the fact that I use it everywhere - and I have an Idaho-state DBA (doing business as) Shoshanna Evers).

Backstory:
I had a Shoshanna Evers profile from 2010 that was converted into a "Like Page" when I couldn't add more friends. For a couple years I just had that Page, and no profile attached.

Then, FB made me create a profile to attach to the Page. So I created a Shoshanna Evers profile. I hid the profile in searches so only my Like Page would come up (I don't want to have to double post in two places on FB), I didn't add any friends to it, and only used it to interact in my Street Team FB Group and during FB events like book release parties.

Separately, I have a private FB profile under my married name where I post pics of my kid, etc, for the relatives. That profile is hidden and there are no cross-over friends.

Here's what happened:
On May 21st 2015 (as I write this is the 28th, and the problem just got resolved a few hours ago), I participated in a FB party using my Shoshanna Evers profile. I've done that before. This time, I decided to message the 4 winners to make sure they knew to email me for their prizes. BAD MOVE!! That flagged FB, because I was messaging people who weren't my "friends."

So don't ever message someone who isn't a "friend" from your profile, because that will get you flagged! Good to know, right? Fortunately I have made all the mistakes this week so you don't have to! ;)

The next day when I went to log in, I got a message saying my account access has been locked until I "verify my identity."

Silly me, at first I was happy. Yay, they're going to give me a blue check mark just like Twitter did, right? NOPE. I sent them what I had sent Twitter - a pic of a contract that showed I was (legal/birth name) writing as Shoshanna Evers along with my driver's license showing I am my legal name.

Denied. So I end up going back and forth, sending a total of eleven documents (including my Idaho DBA, a royalty statement, a screen shot of my access into my own official website, a screen shot of a Tweet to FB from my Verified Twitter account, etc) all verifying that I am really Shoshanna Evers, and that it's really me running the profile and Page - unlike, for example, the Shoshanna Evers page that I *don't* run, which I also linked to.

Every step of the way, a new person contacted me to tell me no. It took me a very long time to realize that no one was actually looking at my past emails or documents - each time they denied me and said I have to verify my legal name is Shoshanna Evers.

I quoted their own help site stating that it has to be your "authentic name" - not LEGAL name - but the name you are known as in real life and online - if you've ever met me, you know I introduce myself as Shoshanna Evers. I reminded them that since October of 2014 their "legal name" policy changed to "authentic name" because they had a lot of backlash from drag queens who were forced to out themselves using their legal male names.

No one listened. No one cared. It was like encountering a steady stream of brick walls, each one entirely new and with no knowledge of all the links and pics I'd sent.

Then, some jerk at FB closed my support ticket (and I'm thinking, "hey, we're not done here!") and worst of all, changed my Shoshanna Evers profile name to my married name. I couldn't even get into my account to deactivate it! He totally doxed me and put my married, private name out to all the FB groups I am a part of. I got a screen shot and a confused email from another author asking why my name had changed, but she couldn't click it because the profile was gone. Fun, right?

Here's how I finally fixed the problem:

I reopened the case.

I recognized I would need to send them ONE image that contained:

1. a screenshot of their own help page stating what forms of ID are acceptable

2. Circled the forms of ID I was giving them (two from Option 2)

3. The forms of ID on that same image, right there, with the circled form of ID pasted above each one. (I used the free program Paint and used "Paste From" to add the pics I needed, in case you aren't sure how to make several images into one easily)

In other words, I made it impossible for anyone looking at that one image to deny me access. And I got it back. *throws confetti*

What forms of ID did I use?
An employee identification card - fortunately, as CEO of my company, I issued an immediate directive that all four employees could have ID cards on request, and I requested one. Ta da!

The other was membership in a professional organization - RWA. I am attaching the image I sent them so you can see what finally worked. And since I doubt I am the first or last author this is going to happen to, I am blogging about this as well. When I was searching online to find out how to fix the problem, all I found were people who were flagged for using their actual legal names because their legal names sounded "fake" to someone at Facebook. *rolls eyes*

Hope that helps you - oh, and another form of ID you can get now in case you have a problem in the future is to save mail sent to your pen name and take a pic of it.

Best,
Shoshanna, who is glad to be back on Facebook!
You’ve discovered your character’s need, and potential their
want, which is a false goal. You’ve learned about the four types of obstacles
that can obstruct your character on the way to achieving their goals and
filling their need. Now, to build a heart-pounding story where you send your
character through the toughest obstacle course you can imagine, you should map
out a blueprint for the course.

About Ines Johnson:

Ines writes books for strong women who suck at love. If you rocked out to the twisted triangle of Jem, Jericha, and Rio as a girl; if you were slayed by vampires with souls alongside Buffy; if you need your scandalous fix from Olivia Pope each week, then you’ll love her books!

Aside from being a writer, professional reader, and teacher, Ines is a very bad Buddhist. She sits in sangha each week, and while others are meditating and getting their zen on, she’s contemplating how to use the teachings to strengthen her plots and character motivations.

Ines lives outside Washington, DC with her two little sidekicks who are growing up way too fast.

<strike>Last week</strike> Yesterday we learned that characters have holes that only
‘needs’ can fill. Before a character can see their need, they have to yearn
after a want, which takes them on a bumpy ride to nowhere.

This obstacle course consists of four physical and/or internal
complications that force the hero or heroine to make decisions that produce
dramatic action.

The four kinds of obstacles are:

The Antagonist (Bad Guy)

A specific antagonist lends clarity and power to the dramatic
structure because his primary function is to oppose the protagonist. He doesn’t
necessarily have to be evil, but he should personify the protagonist’s
obstacles.

Example: Cinderella’s
Wicked Step Mother

Physical Obstructions

Physical obstructions are just what they seem –material
barriers standing in the way of the protagonist. These can be rivers, deserts,
mountains, a dead-end street, or a car causing a crash –anything that presents
a substantial obstacle for the protagonist.

Example: Arielle’s fin

Inner/Psychological
Problems

Inner obstacles are intellectual, emotional, or psychological
problems the protagonist must overcome before being able to achieve his goal.
For example, dealing with fear, pride, jealousy, or the need to mature fall
into this category.

Example: Fiona’s (from
Shrek) appearance

Mystic Forces

Mystic forces enter most stories as accidents or chance but
they can be expressed as moral choices or ethical codes, which present
obstacles. They can also be personified as gods or supernatural forces, which
the characters have to content with.

Example: Tiana’s (from
The Frog Prince) magical transformation into a frog

Exercise

Which of these obstacles will your character face? Will they
face more than one type of obstacle during the course of the story?

<strike>Next week</strike> Tomorrow, we’ll put it all together -the character, need, and
obstacle- into a scene card.

PART ONE: THE "HOLE" CHARACTER

All characters have holes (notice it rhymes with goal). You
open the first chapter and find a human being who believes they are lacking
something crucial in their lives. Perhaps it’s the dream job, or the right
social circle, or their mother’s approval, or maybe its love.

Rarely do you enter the world of a character who finds
themselves whole. A part is usually missing. For the next tens of thousands of
words you will embark upon a journey with that character to fill that void.

Characters fill these holes in one of two ways; with either a
want or need.

Remember when you were young and you wanted the fancy pair of
jeans? Think Brenda in 90210. Fresh
from the Midwest, thrown into the dangerous waters of the Beverly Hills elite,
and her working class parents couldn’t afford the patchwork, ripped jeans that
cost the same as a car payment. But Brenda wanted those holey jeans so that she
could fit in with Kelly and Donna. In Carol’s, her mother’s eyes, there was a need
for a new pair of pants for
Brenda to wear to school and that’s what Brenda got. Now if we watched that
20-year old episode we know what Brenda did to those new pair of jeans and she
made holes in her jeans to fill her social void.

You might want a pair of Louis Vuitton, but in the end you need
a pair of functioning heels to go with that cute dress.

A want is a false goal, a red herring that throws both
the reader and the character off the true course that will fill the character’s
hole. It takes some time and some bumps in the road before the character
realizes their want is not likely what they need. The need perfectly
fills the void the character has been experiencing.

Exercise

Take a look at your main character(s). What is it that they
need in order to be whole again? Now consider if it would serve your story for
your character to have a false goal that keeps them from seeing their true need
for a good portion of the story?

<strike>Next week </strike>Tomorrow(!), you’ll learn the four types of obstacles that a
character might face during their course of their quest for their ‘need.’
Wait a minute… who is Jezebel Lixxx?

Jezebel Lixxx is the secret pen name for New York Times and USA Today bestselling romance author Shoshanna Evers (shhhh don’t tell). Jezebel write crazy-pants erotica, and really doesn’t care if her characters get a happily ever after, as long as they get each other off! She lives in a padded cell in the far corner of Shoshanna’s imagination, where she only comes out if she smells salted chocolate. You can’t even follow her on social media… but sometimes she Tweets for her boss.

If You Publish It, They Will Come

That may have been true ten, five years ago in indie publishing. It is no longer the case today. Readers have a lot of authors and books to choose from. They don’t know you, so you have to do something to get their attention.

Okay, but what something? After visiting Google, I decided to do my own blog tour. I went to listservs and chat rooms for authors and asked questions. Established authors said a blog tour was a waste of time. But new and indie authors said to go for it. I had nothing to lose, and no money to spend, so I did it myself. Here’s how I did it.

1. Build a MEDIA KIT

Honestly, this wasn’t the first thing I did. I realized I needed it as responses started rolling in with bloggers requesting the same materials over and again. But I recommend it be the first thing you do.

A media kit is everything a blogger could possibly want or need in order to host you on their webpage. Include in your Media Kit the following:

Your book blurb. I included different lengths of my blurb, including the full blurb that’s up on Amazon. A shorter three sentence blurb. And a one sentence blurb. My debut book was erotic romance, so I also had to be sure and include a PG version of my blurb for bloggers who also showcased YA books.

Book excerpts. Choose one to two scenes that you feel would get readers engaged in your story. I recommend the excerpt should start somewhere in the middle of the scene and end before the scene is over at a high point of tension. If you choose well, this tactic would naturally lead a reader to push the ‘buy now’ link so they can find out what happens next. Again, make sure you have a PG excerpt for bloggers who showcase YA books.

Guest Posts. I wrote three guests posts for my tour. I found that bloggers liked craft pieces, writing tips, and social commentary. So, I wrote one of each. I also found that some bloggers wanted you to answer their list of questions instead of using your posts. I complied, and then saved each question and answer. I included these Q&A’s in my media kit and made them available to all subsequent bloggers.

Author biography. Be sure to include the bio you’ve written for yourself and posted on your website. I found that some bloggers preferred a one sentence bio, called a tagline. So, I paired my long bio down and included two options in my kit.

Links. Be sure to include your store purchase links, your website url, and all social media links and handles. In my ebook, I have fancy graphic links. I assumed the bloggers would do something graphical with my link, but few did. Instead they just left the entire URL up under my name. I didn’t like that, but I had to realize that many of these bloggers weren’t graphic artists or any more tech savvy than your average person. Moving forward, I’ll need to think of a better way to list these links.

(***Hint from Shoshanna Evers - make bitly links that look nice & short - see the links at the bottom of the page here for an example.***)

Images. Attach images separately, as well as in the body of the kit. If you have a lot of images, make them available upon request.

That was a lot of information, but I suggest you get started on that before contacting bloggers. Many get back to you straight away and begin making requests.

2. Find BLOGGERS

Once your media kit is assembled, you need to start finding blogs to host your amazing information.

I began my search at the Book Blogger Directory: https://bookbloggerdirectory.wordpress.com/

I made certain to check for bloggers who were in my genre.

I also checked their sites to see when their last activity happened. You don’t want to spend time querying a blogger whose last post was in 2013.

3. Make CONTACT

Once I had my list of vetted bloggers in my genre, I began to contact them. Be aware that some of these bloggers have handy Google Docs. They’d prefer you use these instead of emailing them directly.

For those I emailed directly, I made a form email, but I sent each blogger an individual email with their name in the salutation. I also tailored the form email to each blogger where possible. For example, if I saw that a blogger was only interested in author interviews, I didn’t mention that I had blog posts and excerpts because I knew they wouldn’t be interested in those items.

Here’s an example of the basic form email that I sent out:

Dear [Book Blogger],

I write erotic romance, paranormal romance, and fairytale retellings under the pen name, Ines Johnson. My newest release, Pumpkin: a Cindermama story, which is a fairytale retelling of the Cinderella story will hit the print and virtual shelves on March 17th.

I’ve planned a book tour throughout the month of March to create some buzz and garner a bigger audience for my book. I’d love to make a stop at your site. I’m happy to do a Q&A, a blog posting, submit my book for your review, or any combination of the three. I’ve prepared three posts for the occasion. If you feel that one of the topics might interest your readers, I would be happy to make it available to you any day during the month of March and April. Attached you’ll find my Media Kit for your convenience.

4. Keep RECORDS

It looks bad to contact the same person over and again. Or to forget that you agreed to give this blogger that post on this day. I kept a spreadsheet in Google Docs so that I had access to it at all times.

On the list I listed the blog title, the blog URL, the contact person’s name and email address. In other columns, I placed what each blog looked for from guest bloggers, when I contacted them, if they responded, if they said yes and what they wanted, when the post would be live, and when they needed the information by. You should also note if they want exclusive content, and if they want you to provide them a giveaway.

* a note about giveaways: try where possible to offer your book as a giveaway. I got my highest sales on the days I offered my book as a free giveaway. I didn’t want to offer a gift card, remember I was broke by this time.

5. Be SOCIAL

As the blog tour began, I made a fancy banner announcing the tour for my webpage. I linked to each blog that hosted me.

On the day of each tour stop, I tweeted and posted each blog. And I visited each site to try and interact with any commenters and responded where appropriate.

6. Send THANK YOU NOTES

But the most important thing I did, was mind my manners. After each post I wrote a personalized thank you note to each blogger. I told them how they affected my sales rank that day. Each one invited me back!

7. The VERDICT

I had phenomenal success with my tour! I was on thirty blogs over the course of my launch week. As soon as those posts went live, my debut novel was launched into the Top 100 where its stayed for a week after my launch. I could see the effects in real time. When a tour stop went live, an hour or so later, I’d see sales. I didn’t see much of a blip on social media (ie, my newsletter or Facebook Likes). My Twitter follows did see some of an uptick, but mostly from the bloggers themselves as they tweeted about the post.

Thanks, Ines, for that awesome information! I know her method works, because she got me to post for her ;)

I do have one additional suggestion: offer to give the blogger your post in HTML code. I had to do some formatting in order for her blog post to look good on my site (as will happen if you just copy/paste a post from an email), and it took up a bit of time, whereas I feel that the easier you make it for the blogger, the better! Also, add your links into your post whenever possible (I added Ines' Twitter link in).

Don't forget to check out her new book:

3 Ways Reading Romance Can Benefit Your Life

Even before Fifty
Shades of Grey was on the scene, women were
avid readers of romance. According to the International Business Times, some 75 million people (90
percent of them women) in the United States read at least one romance novel in
2008, though most are long-time dedicated readers of the genre. And with the
rising popularity of all things kink, being more open about your preference in
literature is not only no longer taboo, it’s encouraged. This is made evident
by Adam and Eve, who explain that erotic
novels offer a slew of sex positive possibilities. Reading your favorite scenes
from a steamy romance aloud to your partner is sure to get you both in the
mood, benefiting your libido and overall sex life. But that’s not all romance
novels have to offer.

Here are 3 ways erotica can give your life a boost
outside of the bedroom:

Improve Memory and Brain Function

It’s
fairly well-known that reading offers plenty of intellectual perks. Cracking
open a book regularly can enhance analytical thinking skills, improve your
memory, and even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease, according to ABC News. But it may come as a surprise
that these benefits are not only gained by reading the classics; cognitive
functions can get a boost from erotic romance, too. Take into consideration
other areas the romance genre stimulates in addition to your brain, and reading
suddenly becomes a total body experience.

Improve Self-Confidence

Gone
are the days of the damsel in distress. The majority of modern-day romance
heroines are strong, sassy, and not afraid to express what they want, and then
go out and get it. As Today notes, more contemporary
romance novels are featuring fearless female leads in many forms. Their covers
are showcasing that by having a woman alone on the cover or portraying her
dominating a man. Not only does this role-reversal make for more dynamic
plotlines, not to mention hotter sex scenes, it also helps boost the
self-esteem of readers of the genre.

Through
portrayals of women that are more grounded in the reality of today’s world,
readers can better relate to the heroine in the novel, placing themselves in
her shoes. By vicariously experiencing a scenario though the female characters
in the book, such as a breakup or marital issues, romance readers are able to
successfully work through similar situations in their own lives. They can
provide a new perspective and additional insight into what they really
want.

Improve Your Relationship

Although
there’s no doubt your sex life will benefit from reading erotic romance, other
areas of your relationship are likely to reap the rewards, too. The Guardian reported that researchers from the University of Buffalo
found reading fiction can help you better empathize with others, including your
honey. With increased empathy, you’ll be able to see your partner’s side of
things, which can come in handy when faced with a disagreement or major life
decision.

Romance
novels are full of emotional moments, and regular exposure to heartfelt
expressions, even when it’s between two characters in a book, can aid in
recognition of that same affection in the real world. By being more receptive
to this kind of emotional vulnerability, you’ll be more likely to communicate
with your partner, not only in regards to sexual fantasies and desires, but about
everyday occurrences. This will then strengthen your bond and overall
connection, both in and out of the bedroom.

What does getting a rejection mean? Is it the end of your writing career before it even began?

Nope, not even close.

The best thing about rejections is that they ensure no one who's not excited and passionate about your work will be in charge of selling it. The only thing worse than no agent is a BAD agent! (or should I say, and agent who isn't your #1 fan!). Same thing with editors!

When we get rejections from a pool of agents or editors, they are actually helping us by weeding out the ones who aren't a good fit for our books. And don't we deserve someone who loves our books? I say, let 'em go! It wouldn't have worked out well anyway if they weren't the right person in the first place. :)

That said, when I sent my second-written novel out for submission to an agent and to Harlequin, I got form rejections from both (this was 2000). I was so completely wounded and emotionally hurt from those rejections that I didn't grow my imaginary balls back for another ten years (when I started submitting again in 2010).

By sending out your work, getting rejections but continuing to go for it, you're already ahead of the game by a long shot. We've never even heard of all of the writers who just give up completely in the face of rejection, as I had done for so long. The ones we do hear about, however, are the authors who just keep on keepin' on. They put the rejections behind them and keep submitting and writing new books.

I always know someone's closer to getting published when the amount of rejections starts picking up -- it means they're really in the game!

Oh, and as a side note, if you are an already-published author, and you found this post because you've gotten a rejection letter despite not being a newbie anymore, I am here to tell you that even published authors get rejections. We're just shielded from them by our agents. I remember in 2011 getting a rejection (and I'd been published since 2010), but when I looked online to see if any published author in the history of the world had every been rejected before, I decided by the lack of evidence, that I was the ONLY one!!

Obviously this is not true. Published authors just don't want to taint their reputation by publicly saying that they were rejected for something (unless it's in their pre-pub years), so you won't see blog posts about rejection the way you will with writers who aren't yet published. I figured I should add that side-note here so the next time someone Googles it, they'll find out the truth ;)

“Big Bad Bill” Edwards, the biggest, baddest cowboy in Bear Creek Saddle, Idaho, has only gotten meaner in the years since his bride Melody died young…
Miami bartender Allie Crawford has no idea what she’s getting into when she buys half-ownership of the sexy cowboy’s bar, inherited from his late uncle.

She’d thought they’d built a friendship based on several months of emails back and forth. But in person, Big Bad Bill will do anything to keep her at arm’s length… only he can’t. The man is sinfully sexy trouble — big trouble. Especially since Allie is just one year out from when her cheating ex destroyed their marriage.

How can Bill and Allie be together if their hearts can’t handle the risk of breaking once more?

Bill has just three rules for dealing with Allie: Don’t kill her. Don’t kiss her. And above all, don’t fall in love…not ever again.

For fans of cowboy romance, Idaho ranchers (heck, even Montana ranchers, since they’re neighbors), and sizzling hot contemporary romance, this short novel by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shoshanna Evers is set in the mountains of small-town Bear Creek Saddle, Idaho. Ride ‘em, cowboy!

Bill could feel Allie’s excitement in the air. It was contagious; her energy enveloped him like an embrace. He grinned at her.

“I suppose we could put signs up on the bulletin boards around town,” he suggested.

“And take out an ad in the county newspaper!” Allie added.

He hadn’t thought of that for some reason. “Good call. You’re smart.”

She gave him a look, like she couldn’t tell if he was making fun of her or not.

“I already knew that,” he added. “From your emails. But I like seein’ how your brain works in action.”

Her blonde hair was still a bit disheveled from when he’d had his hand over her eyes. Carefully, he reached over and smoothed back an errant piece. Her hair smelled good, like some kind of flower, something he’d smelled before. Jasmine? Lavender?

How strange that this woman he’d been exchanging emails with for three months now was here, in person. And he’d never known what she looked like, never pictured her as this beautiful, smart woman all wrapped up in a tiny package.

Allie smiled. “Thank you.”

He couldn’t help but to watch her lips. The top one was a bit smaller than the bottom one. Every once in a while she’d pull out a lip balm and smear it on without a mirror. Cherry Chapstick. It made her lips look a bit pinker, a bit shinier — but still natural. What would that taste like?

No. Kissing her was a bad idea. They had a business to run together. Getting all tangled up in a fling could ruin their working relationship permanently. And that was the only sort of relationship he could ever have...business.

“You’re beautiful, too,” he told her, barely aware he was speaking out loud. “I don’t know how to act ‘round you.”

A pretty blush colored Allie’s cheeks. “Same as before, I guess. Before we ever saw each other.”

“But it ain’t the same,” he said, “bein’ with you here.”

“I like when you’re nice to me.” She gave him a playful tap on the arm. “Sometimes it seems like you’re just being ornery to keep me at arm’s length.”

“Yeah,” he said. “That’s clearly not workin’.”

Don’t over-think it, man. Just go for it.

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to him. Her body was putty in his arms, so accepting. She looked up at him as if she knew exactly what he was about to do.

Bill went for it. He kissed her hard, needing to put every ounce of emotion he had into that kiss. It was a kiss that said You are beautiful, and it was a kiss that said I’m glad you’re my partner. It was a kiss that said I can’t do anything at this moment, other than kiss you.

Her lips opened to receive him, his mouth, and Allie moaned. Their bodies pressed against each other, tightening with unfurling lust. The kiss deepened. She pulled his lower lip into her mouth and gently bit it.

His body responded readily, and she was right up against him, so she knew it. Yet she wasn’t pulling away... They could hook up right that moment, right there on the floor of the bar, and fulfill every desire he’d had since he first threw her over his saddle. She was up for it, he knew by the way she tangled her small hands in his hair on the back of his head, pushing his hat forward until the rim touched her own hair, too.

The way she gasped as he kissed her neck made him wish he could simply devour her with his need.

Yes. She wanted him too. Maybe even as much as he wanted her. He stifled a groan of desire as she shifted her weight, pressing right against the large bulge in his jeans.

Wait. Don’t do this, not with her.

Reality hit him. He would be in business with Allie Crawford for a long time. Getting intimate with her was not the best idea, no matter how much he wanted her. It would complicate things.

And being with her was dangerous. Very dangerous.

After what happened with Melody, Bill had long-vowed he would never fall in love again.

I think the part Kris wrote about why writers QUIT was especially important.
To quote:

Writers have disappeared from the dawn of publishing. I wrote an entire three-blog series about that in 2012, listing 12 reasons why writers stop writing.

Those twelve reasons are:

Writers can’t get a new book contract under that name.

They can’t get a new book contract because their genre has vanished.

They became toxic—and that toxicity trickled through the entire industry.

They achieved all their goals.

They were no longer interested in writing.

They moved to a different part of the industry.

They got discouraged.

They couldn’t handle the solitude.

They couldn’t handle the financial problems inherent in a writing career.

They had life or health issues that interfered with the writing

They didn’t keep up with the changes in the industry.

They sold or gave away too many rights to their books.

Okay, it's me, Shoshanna Evers again. I am lucky that the core group of authors I became friendly with when I first got published in 2010 are still around, still writing books. Maybe it's because I met those authors within traditional publishing, which probably meant those authors had already been writing for a while in order get a publishing contract to begin with, and so were less likely to disappear from the scene than someone who decides to write a short story and self-publish it on Amazon, and then decides nevermind about being an author....? (Obviously I'm not saying that is the case with all or even most self-publishers. But maybe it is for those who quit?)

In the past almost 5 years, I've seen lots of authors come onto the scene with a flash and then vanish after one or two books.

Writing book after book after book, year after year, in solitude, is not for everyone. I think some people try it once, decide the payout wasn't "worth it" or the time wasn't "worth it" and go back to their regular lives. You kinda have to just love it so much you can't imagine being happy doing anything else. Even when I hate it, I love it. :)

Sometimes I think about quitting all social media and promotion, and focus on just writing and sending out a newsletter when I have a new release. But then I'd miss out on actually connecting with the very people I'm writing for. I cherish the friendships I've made with readers. But if I felt burned-out, I would quit social media and promo before I quit writing.

I think if there is anything in the world that someone can do *other* than write, they should do that other thing. Because choosing to be a writer is a very hard path. It's not for the faint of heart.

This year, regarding changes, I chose to continue traditional publishing with NY in addition to indie-publishing, because having advance money upfront takes a lot of the fear-factor out of waiting to see if a book sells before you make any money. That said, I can't see myself giving up indie-publishing because I love the control so much, and the monthly income (NY pays twice a year... Hard to budget on that, plus royalties are lower per book than self-pub) even if the monthly self-pub income has lowered with the introduction of Kindle Unlimited. We'll just have to adapt and figure out ways around it so we can make enough money to keep on goin' on! :)

That's what keeps authors around, and what turns aspiring writers into published authors: We don't quit. We adapt to changes. We stay nimble and we KEEP WRITING!!!

All my best,
Shoshanna Evers

Let me explain that tip in more depth, here, excerpted/updated from the original post Bustle linked to:

Rule number 1 for NaNoWriMo: Give yourself permission to suck!

Leave the typos and plot holes in place, and just keep going. Don't go back and reread - like another commenter said, write a quick note to yourself at the end of the session so you know where to go, like (Hero and heroine have first kiss and she gets upset when villain interrupts.) I actually do that all the time, not just for Nano.

If you find yourself realizing you need to make a change (like you gave away too much info in first chapter) just keep writing as if you've already made the change, and when it's time to edit you can go back and make the change. You can even write a note to yourself like (pretend they never kissed) and keep going.

Many writers can write 1000 words in an hour, so if you give yourself two hours a day you can meet your goal. During Nano I try to write 2K a day to account for days when something happens (like Thanksgiving).

Side note: every day is NaNoWriMo for me; I write at least 2K words a day, every day, in order to keep up with contractual commitments and you know, write a lot of books :)

The Pulse, Book 1 in the Pulse Trilogy was written during NaNoWriMo (75k words); Snowed in With the Tycoon (a book I self-published and which makes me some nice income every month), and The Tycoon's Convenient Bride...and Baby (which was published by Entangled Indulgence, and hit the B&N Nook Bestseller list) were also written in a Nano-esque month. So good books can come out of it, it's all about December and revisions :)

Most importantly, have fun with it. When you don't know what to write next, add in a new secret, a new character, or a new obstacle. Instant plot twist! Shoshanna Evershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10172269305910566840noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5488469955053782194.post-75112602921485529262014-10-24T17:46:00.001-04:002014-10-24T17:46:55.150-04:00How to Write Realistic Domestic Settings in FictionTL;DR: Little details pulled from real-life homes, cities, and jobs that you already know well, can add that extra depth and realism to your fiction.

* * *

In short, visit as many different houses as you can, and take a tour. Maybe it's your friend's house or apartment. Look for open houses you'll never be able to afford, and at open houses in places your character might live. (Be honest and tell the Realtor you are just looking, and not planning on buying within the year, so they don't waste time on you). I worked as a maid for a short time in LA, long ago, and got to see the insides of some incredible homes.

For cities/towns: go to as many places as you can, different cities, or even look online at Google Maps, or watch movies set in cities you want to write about.

I mainly use my own experiences if I'm going to draw on realism for little bits here and there, rather than family history. However, my family history affects who I am, and what sort of experiences I've had.

My family is very New York, (Brooklyn on my dad's side, Manhattan on my mom's), and very Jewish. Having been raised in a Jewish home, it absolutely affects my writing, even if I don't mention religion at all (and even if I consider myself to be a Jewish Christian, now). Someone once pointed out that it's pretty hard to find someone eating pork in my books, lol! I have never in my life eaten a pork chop, or even know how to prepare one, so it wouldn't feel "real" to me to add a small detail like that.

I often use settings I know well, which is why you'll find a lot of stories set where I grew up, in the expensive suburb of NYC that is Westchester County, NY. (Think The Enslaved Trilogy, set in Westchester, NY and NYC, or The Tycoon's Convenient Bride...and Baby, also set in Westchester), and in cities I spent time living in, like NYC (The Pulse Trilogy) and Los Angeles (Hollywood Spank). I'm currently living in northern Idaho, and I'm writing a cowboy romance set in... north Idaho! :)

The careers my heroes and heroines have are almost always those that I've done myself (I've been an RN, EMT, housekeeper, telemarketer, actress, video store clerk, you name it!) -- or a career I know about from a friend, or one of my parents' friends, in addition to whatever research I add on top of it. My parents have some long-time family friends with incredible jobs in NY, and that's where I fashion the careers of most of my Tycoons and Billionaires (sadly, I don't personally know any actual billionaires). There are more than a couple of nurses in my books, since I worked as an RN before leaving to write full time.

As I mentioned above, a long time before that, I worked as a housekeeper for rich folks in LA. I was very, very bad at this job, and didn't last long, lol. But I got an indepth look at amazing houses, at the nooks and crannies and closets and luxurious bathrooms, and I use those settings for my heroes' homes. However, long chunks of description are boring -- when I describe the layout of a house, it's usually only done as it relates to the character, such as "She peered over the open balcony looking down into the great room, watching him as he sat reading before the roaring fire."

I like to know what the interior house already looks like in my head, so I always use a real life point of reference, whether it's a tiny cabin in the woods, a suburban home, or a castle.

Many homes I write are dressed up versions of houses I know well, simply for the layout. I need to know in my head exactly where the kitchen is, where the heroine will head for the door and what room she'll end up in -- and it has to be the same, throughout the book. Some authors even draw a "blueprint" to stay on track!

If on page 1, your character can hear what's being said in the kitchen while she's in the living room, then she'll have to remember to whisper if she says something in the living room that she doesn't want people in the kitchen to know on page 96.

If on page 3, she stares out the window of the bedroom and sees the people walking by the front sidewalk, then she can't forget to close the blinds on page 82 when she undresses and needs privacy.

That's it! I'll repeat here what I put at the top, to close this up, because otherwise I'll just keep thinking of examples. Little details pulled from real-life homes, cities, and jobs that you already know well, can add that extra depth and realism to your fiction.

Happy Writing!
I've been seeing far too many new authors publish with vanity presses and spend huge amounts of money, when they could do it themselves for much less, and end up with a better book.

These "self-publishing houses" which promise to publish you for thousands of dollars are, IMHO (and I'm not alone in feeling this way) such a rip off!

Why yes, I will name names. I have to, since this post is meant to keep you from getting ripped off. In particular, I'm talking about:

Author Solutions (and its imprints, many listed below)

Author House

iUniverse

Outskirts Press

Xlibris

Trafford Publishing

PublishAmerica (now remamed AmericaStar Books) - they say they are "free" but charge money for editing and more, and take control of your books.

Edited to Add: I found another vanity press charging up to $2K and disguised as a "self-publishing service":

Fast Pencil (and its imprints:)
~ Premiere
~ WaveCrest.

If you want to add one in the comments, feel free. There are more than I listed here.

Here's a few articles about the real deal with them:

Let's compare what most of these guys are offering for $999 against what the real cost is when I self-publish. Sometimes these vanity presses offer "basic" packages for paperback and ebook for $699, or packages that essentially just format your ebook and put it up for you, for $499 (or this one that doesn't even offer everything on the list below). I've seen these books and IMO they almost always do a really bad job, and, there are tons of articles about how they don't pay the royalties they should, which you might want to Google around for. Just put the name of the vanity press + Scam into Google).

"All Diamond books include" (for $999):

standard interior black & white layout: real cost is $50 for ebooks at Ebook Formatting Fairies (I've used them before and love them)

an ISBN number: free at the retailers (Createspace and Smashwords (which distributes everywhere but Amazon), and Amazon, and B&N )

a price-embedded barcode: free with free Createspace (I use them for all of my self-pub paperbacks.)

and unlimited wholesale printing, fulfillment, and distribution via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ingram, Baker &Taylor, Bertram, and others: free with Createspace and Smashwords (to reach everyone on that list plus more, except Amazon), and Amazon, and B&N.

Paperback formatting: real cost is $50 for print layout for Createspace at Ebook Formatting Fairies or use a company from Mark's List.

Standard web page: free with Wordpress, or $50-$250 to have one made for you by Winterheart (I've worked with them before I started spending more money) $13 for custom domain name with GoDaddy. Get the domain for even cheaper with these promo codes.

Cover (they offer a basic style you add your name to): To do exactly what the vanity presses offer, you can use the Createspace cover creator here for free. You can also make an ebook cover for free (or $1 per image or specialized text) at Canva. For a professional premade cover, most covers start at $69 for a one-of-a-kind cover from SelfPubBookCovers.com (full disclosure: I own that company, but you can go anywhere, it's your choice), or even cheaper depending on who you go with. Here's a list which includes cover designers and formatters, too: http://www.smashwords.com/list. Be prepared that many custom-designed professional covers cost around $200 and up. You can spend a lot on covers or nothing, it's up to you.

Press release: they don't appear to even offer distribution! Writing a press release is easy, and that's all they're offering you. So that's free. And at PRWeb, it's $99 with distribution everywhere. http://service.prweb.com/pricing/

Audio excerpt: pointless unless you have an audiobook, which you can have made for free using a royalty share with the narrator at ACX.com

10 author paperback copies: costs about $3 per book using author discount at Createspace, so $30.

In conclusion, they are offering for $999 what would cost you $130 total for ebook formatting and some author copies - the rest of the "package" is just free stuff already available to you if you know where to look, which now you do!

You can get the same things, but WAY BETTER and more professional AND have pros do it all for you, for a grand total of less than $300 plus the cost of a cover (they aren't giving you a cover anyway, they're offering the same tool that you can get at Createspace cover creator here for free), but a pro cover adds anywhere from $50 to $250. So you'd spend a total of $300 - $550 (high end includes highest cost cover), and you'd have all the control, all the royalties sent directly to you, and have a better product.

Hopefully this post will help new writers who want to self-publish and don't know where to start, save over $500.

Hiring an editor is always a big add-on expense at these publishers, but you can hire your own developmental or line editor for much cheaper, and also get a better manuscript!

Even if you don't go with an editor, and instead use critique partners and beta readers, I highly recommend hiring a copyeditor to help you make the actual book error-free. That costs about 2 cents a word. Just google around, I found this one online with good testimonials, but you can find more copyeditors on your own: http://revisionfairy.com/small-business-writing-consultant/copy-editing-services-order/

I wish you all the best. My goal with this post is help other authors keep their costs down and avoid getting ripped off.

Best,

But, that only applies if you want to change the title of a book that was traditionally published, and then self-pub it with a different title (you will lose your reviews in that case). By keeping the same title as another edition, the reviews will transfer over.

You won't lose your reviews of a self-published book, however, even if you change its title!

You CAN give your title a makeover, by changing the book title (and cover) for a book that is already for sale. Here's how you do it:

Go onto your self-publishing Dashboard (I'll use KDP as an example).

EDIT the book details for the book whose title you want to change.

Change the title (again, you're *not* uploading as a new book)

Upload a new cover with the new title.

Upload a new book-file that has the title page and copyright page updated.

Change your blurb to include a notice to your readers, like this:

**Originally published in 2012 under the title Dominatrix Fantasy Trilogy Set: Spanked, Denied, and Collared

If the reader has already purchased the book, Amazon will stop them from re-purchasing it, and will send them the new updated covers, etc, to their Kindle. That way you don't confuse people, which would piss them off, if they bought the same book twice by mistake!

As you can guess, I gave the Dominatrix Fantasy series a makeover! As review after review came in, saying they were surprised to discover the books were romances, (not pure erotica as the titles and covers suggested), and as sales waned, I realized I needed to showcase what the books *really* are, by branding them properly.

Here it is, in part (personal info redacted for privacy):

"I am writing a book, which I have never done before, we were discussing help with the writing/editing/formatting and [redacted] suggested reaching out to you.

I am wondering if you could provide me with some direction and if you might possibly know the estimated cost of hiring someone for some help. I appreciate any insight, advice, suggestions etc."

This is my response, and if you are an aspiring writer, you may find it helpful as well!

There are several things to do before you even think about getting a profession editor.

First, finish the book!

Then, set the book aside for two weeks and don't look at it.

Then pull it out and revise it on your own (having some space from the book will help you see the problems in it).

When you feel like it's perfect, find a critique partner to swap books with. You'll read hers and give detailed suggestions, and she'll read yours and do the same. I recommend using the Track Changes feature in MS Word to do this.

This is an example of one of my own books during the editing process, using Track Changes with my editor (click the pic to make it bigger!):

You can find a critique partner (CP) by joining a local writing group, or even joining one online. Here's a post about how to do that.

Then, after you've revised according to what your CP suggests, send the book to beta-readers. Those are regular readers (not your mom, and not your friends) who will read your book.

Ask beta-readers questions like:

"At what point did you get a little bored and put the book down?" (shows where pacing lags or where the book lacks conflict)

"What didn't you believe could really happen?" (shows where you need to build motivation)

"What did you like best about (specific character)? What did you like least?"

"Did the ending of the book satisfy you? If not, what sort of ending would you prefer?"

"Is there anything else about this book that you think I should fix or change?"

Send it to at least three beta-readers. Ask them to be "brutally honest."

If everyone says the same thing, you know you need to change it. If one reader says it but the others don't, you don't need to change it. If it's a tie, tie-breaker is the author (you).

Then, after all of that is done, that is when you could consider hiring a professional editor. It's expensive, so don't skip the steps above!

Developmental plus line edits are usually about 2cents a word (which equals $5 per double-spaced page when using Times New Roman 12 point font). That means for an 80K word (320 pages) book, you'd pay $1,600.

If you plan on submitting your book to literary agents, then you don't need to pay for a professional editor (or a formatter, which is a different thing - they format the book into files ready to upload to the retailers. Check out Smashword's Mark's List for some good formatters)

If you plan on self-publishing the book, then you do need an editor. If you want to self-publish, download a FREE pdf of my ebook Successful Self-Publishing: How We Do It (And How You Can Too) at SelfPubBookCovers.com (that's my book cover company). If you want it in print, here it is.

There are some great freelance editors out there. Look for ones who used to work for big publishers, like Mallory Braus, who used to edit for Harlequin/Carina Press, or Megan Records, who edited for Kensington.

There are plenty of others, of course, but remember that cheaper isn't always better when it comes to edits! Also remember that any fool can hang up a shingle and call themselves an editor. Look for editors with experience and references.

Good luck with your book! Don't put the cart before the horse. Finish the book first and go from there.

Sadly, most people who start writing a book never actually finish. If you can write "The End" then you are way ahead of most aspiring writers!!

All my best,
Shoshanna

If you are an author who has retained your audio rights, like I did with The Enslaved Trilogy, or self-published (like The Dominatrix Fantasy Series), then you can make audiobooks too!

If you don't have money to pay a narrator upfront (which can be thousands of dollars), you can do a royalty split, where the profits are shared 50-50 with the narrator. That's what I did, because I wanted to put a lot of books into audio as fast as possible. I'm working with three different narrators, and we've got a busy schedule!

The narrator produces the audiobook from the ebook you send them. They upload it, etc.

The process on ACX is very straightforward - they walk you through it. The most time-consuming task, for me, is listening to the final audio and requesting changes as needed.

I found that the best way to find narrators is to search them out on the site, listen to their portfolio, then contact them directly. Unless you get a stipend from ACX (where they give the narrator money upfront), it's hard to get auditions. I was able to get stipends for The Enslaved Trilogy, and I got tons of auditions for that!

Make sure you put in your emails to narrators how you will market the audiobooks. I put my Twitter followers, Facebook fans, mailing list, etc.

It's worth it, though - this month's royalty check from ACX is 1/3 of my Amazon.com royalties for self-published books! That means I increased my monthly income by 33%, without writing a new book. I can't wait until I have all of my books made into audiobooks!

Best of all, I'm connecting with new readers, readers who love listening to audiobooks!

Here's the info on my current audiobooks. I've got lots more in the works! :) You can listen to 5 minute long samples for free by clicking the button for your retailer of choice! :)
